It’s the first week I missed this year! Next week I’ll be back on track.
Goal #4: Read books to gain knowledge and new perspectives
β (4a) Goal accomplished in reading 30 minutes a day for 5 days for Week 13/52. Currently, I’m still reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s The Signature of All Things and finished reading Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money.
π§ (4b) Goal in progress: I will review 6 books in 2022 and post them on this blog.
Book 1/6: Maybe You Should Talk to Someone
Book 2/6: If I Had Your Face
Book 3/6: Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones
Book 4/6: Joyful: The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness
Goal #5: Improve my listening skills
β (5a) Goal accomplished in listening to one Design Matters Podcast for Week 13/52. This week, I listened to Debbie Millman interview Robert Fabricant + Cliff Kuang, authors of User Friendly: How the Hidden Rules of Design Are Changing the Way We Live, Work, and Play.
How did it happen that user experience came to dominate so much of our waking lives?
Robert Fabricant + Cliff Kuang, Design Matters with Debbie Millman
You have to know why people behave as they do β and design around their foibles and limitations, rather than some ideal.
Cliff Kuang + Robert Fabricant, User Friendly: How the Hidden Rules of Design Are Changing the Way We Live, Work, and Play
Adding User Friendly: How the Hidden Rules of Design Are Changing the Way We Live, Work, and Play to my to-read list!
β (5b) Goal accomplished in listening to one TED talk for Week 13/52. This week I listened to
The strongest predictor for success | Angela Lee Duckworth
Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, and not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality.
Angela Lee Duckworth | Ted Talk
Currently, grit is something I’m trying to develop.
Goal #6: Emulate Krista Tippetβs (Winner of the National Humanities Medal, Peabody Awards, Webby Awards) way of speaking.
β (6) Goal accomplished in emulating a sentence of Krista Tippet’s for Week 13/52 from this Design Matters Podcast.
Goal #7: Learn how to grow microgreens from Mark starting 6/1/2022 (Week 22/52)
π(7) Goal N/A for Week 13/52.

Goal #1: Maintain my mental and physical health
β (1a) Goal accomplished in singing two positive songs and one song of my choice every day for Week 13/52.
β (1b) Goal accomplished in meditating and practicing 25 minutes of yoga 5 to 7 days for Week 13/52.
β (1c) Goal accomplished for lifting weights 3 to 5 days a week for Week 13/52.

I played 3 hours of table tennis and hiked for 2 hours at Muscoot Farms.

β (1e) Goal not accomplished in sleeping before 11:30 PM every day for Week 13/52.
I keep failing this goal! Itβs likely because I donβt want to do it as much as I thought I did. But getting enough sleep and quality sleep is integral to being mentally and physically healthy so I will be making this a priority going forward.
Goal #2: Work on my marriage
β (2a) Goal accomplished in continuing my weekly marriage meeting (#191), financial checkup, and date night with Mark for Week 13/52.
β (2b) Goal accomplished in helping Mark organize for 15-30 minutes every day this past week for Week 13/52.
Goal #3: Encourage my mom to expand her worldview starting Week 13/52
β (3a) Goal accomplished in teaching my mom English for Week 13/52.
Itβs uncomfortable to realize the extent of my momβs lack of education. For example, this week I was shocked to discover that my mom does not communicate clearly in Mandarin or Shanghainese which is why she has trouble formulating sentences in English. This isn’t sudden, it was only because I was used to her way of speaking and prompting her when she pauses and falters.
Going forward, I’m going to ask her to refrain from speaking Shanghainese to me. This way she can focus on speaking cohesive and coherent sentences in Mandarin which she can then translate into English.
π (3b) Goal not applicable in practicing Senior Yoga with my mom for Week 13/52.
My mom and I decided to skip this week to focus on more brain-related exercises.
β (3c) Goal accomplished in teaching my mom how to become more proficient at using her iPhone for Week 13/52.
Goal #4: Prioritize friendships
β (4a) Goal accomplished in meeting up with friends 1 to 4 times a month for Week 13/52. I had a marvelous time hiking the yellow and red trail of Muscoot Farms with Maverick, Sure Sure, and Mark!
We walked, talked, laughed, snacked, ran, and one of us even did a spectacular roll!
β (4b) Goal accomplished in chatting with 1 to 3 friends over the phone/zoom for Week 13/52. I chatted with Ubongo.
Goal #5: Remember my late father through cooking starting Week 9/52 on 3/3 (my father’s birthday).
β (5) Goal accomplished in posting one recipe on this site for Week 13/52, Easy Bok Choy Stir Fry.

Dear readers, how was your progression towards your 2022 goals? π
91% – including an off day spent with friends.
It’s both interesting and disconcerting to see that the people we’ve been around all our lives do not speak in complete sentences. In fact, I’ve come to realize that I was completing their sentences for them, sometimes out loud, sometimes in my mind. This habit then becomes their crutch – they have no idea how disjointed their way of speaking are. I say this because we ourselves can go that direction as well if we are not continually building our skills and keeping up with (ever-changing) societal norms.
Congrats on your 91%! π
I think it’s important to not finish each other’s sentences and learn to become a generous listener.
